BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

VIRGINIA GORDON

SEASON 2021

Virginia Gordon is a recent graduate of the MFA Furniture Design program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she has been undergoing extensive training in woodworking, metalworking, and soft goods.

Prior to this, she was Community and Marketing Manager at the 3D printing and digital fabrication space at ‘Shapeways’, where she led the jewelry 3D printing community, designing and leading company-wide campaigns. Here, Virginia became versed in bio-design and finding alternative means of production to allow for a more sustainable practice.

“Virginia created living pieces of furniture – objects that pervade our lives and space – that allow for reflection on the roles of gender and sustainability.”

Virginia explored natural biomaterials, clay, steel, wood, and glass to create sculptural and functional pieces that incorporate traditional forms of femme-making while improving upon materials and forms inspired by and beneficial for nature. Virginia created living pieces of furniture – objects that pervade our lives and space – that allow for reflection on the roles of gender and sustainability.

To present her work at the end of her residency, Virginia installed her work in an old oak tree next to the historic château. Suspended from its branches, the pieces became mobiles, turning with the light from the sun.
