BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

YASMIN LENNON-CHONG

SEASON 2021

Yasmin Lennon-Chong is a critical and speculative designer based in London, UK. Her work is situated at the intersections of art, architecture, design, and urbanism, exploring a convergence of practices as means to challenge, enhance and speculate alternative modes of creating and inhabiting physical environments. With an emphasis towards enhanced sensory, embodied experience in the built environment, Yasmin works as a freelance graphic and 3D designer across these sectors.

Yasmin created a site-specific and responsive element to the environment of Boisbuchet through the lens and notion of EXPERIENCE, INFRASTRUCTURE, and SUPPORT – three core areas of interest within her practice. Yasmin spent time researching and conducting a form of ‘derive’ – a rural psycho-geography within the Domaine that allowed her to establish a sense of place and reflect on the site as an experiential framework which could be in some way enhanced, utilised, or responded to. Through this process, she arrived at a series of ideas which she quickly refined, designed, and mapped out to a specific area.

Set back from the lake in a woodland area, the final manifestation was a suspended pinewood structure custom-built around a cluster of trees. The structure was intended as an invitation, as a stage and possible interface between human experience and nature. The work is a starting point and visual prototype rather than a finished product, which Yasmin is currently developing and expanding beyond the residency including material and structural experimentation and adapting to urban contexts.
