BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

JORGE ELÓSEGUI ASTRAIN

SEASON 2021

In 2013, Jorge Elósegui founded Estudio Primo, where he works as a graphic designer and art director. Here he has developed numerous projects related to graphic, product and spatial design, but always working with a holistic vision of design in mind.

Jorge believes in the function of design as a tool for change; as a way to seek better consumption and production practices in society; and as a way to build a better place in which to live and work together. As the tagline reads for their series of baseball caps the studio released in the Spring of 2020, ‘DEMUESTRA QUE NO ERES UN ROBOT’, or ‘prove you are not a robot’.

Jorge started his residency at Boisbuchet with an idea for an initial prototype of a series of stools, based on the design of large corrugated plastic pipes you can see on construction sites. Typically these pipes are cut, filled with concrete and used as a base to place temporary traffic signs. Seeing the shape and size of these pieces as beautiful, it occurred to Jorge to design a stool with the same shape. At his residency in Boisbuchet, Jorge built a plaster mold starting from the pipe itself, which he then poured concrete into, which set to reveal the shape of the pipe in its new form: a stool.

On his return to San Sébastien, Jorge decided to make the stools in tuned clay, which had been his original idea. Working with the ceramicist Idioa Grijalbo, Jorge made rulers with corrugated profiles that then helped Idoila make the pieces uniform. Together they made three pieces for the exhibition ‘Bloom’ organised by the Moduz collective, which took place in the Cristina Enea Park in October 2021.
