BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME
STAV BOZAGLO
SEASON 2022
Stav Bouzaglo is an Israeli interdisciplinary designer based in Tel Aviv\Paris. Stav studied for her bachelor’s in jewelry and industrial design at Shenkar college and continued to a Master’s in science of industrial design while collaborating with multiple scientists at Technion university.
Her research examined biomineralization as a way to fabricate and design objects for seawater environments as artificial corals for rehabilitation of the sea environment. She works across different mediums to explore science theories throughout design. Working at the crossing point between art design and science.
While her training allows her to bridge sensitive narratives with rigid material and detail-oriented awareness, she works with biomaterials inspired by bio morphologies and behaviors.
“Boisbuchet offered an opportunity to think about slow fabrication differently according to the natural resources around the domaine.”
Bouzaglo is working on a new method of slow fabrication to create slow-growing mineralization shapes from CaCo3 inspired by biomimetic morphology.
These shapes go into seawater and collect more CaCo3 continuing the mineralization process in the ocean. It is a nonstop growing way of fabricating different forms. This process of on-site materials helps preserve and rehabilitate the oceanic environment.
Her proposal for the Boisbuchet Residency Award was an extension of her diplomas during her residency, Stav developed this project further by creating a CaCO3 tea ceremony in the Japanese guest house.
Stav created a series of metal objects related to tea gestures and put them in a boiled kettle where the shapes grew and collect the CaCO3 from the kettle. This allows to dwell on the leftovers of boiled water while creating sculptures from the ‘dirtiness’ in the kettle.
Her criticism of fabrication materials and theology is what inspired her to look for a slower way, using on-site materials and natural resources combined with industrial knowledge we have today. A new way of making it beneficial not only for the ecosystem.
Bouzaglo blurs the boundaries of disciplines and aims to establish a deeper relationship between design and environment.
