The Workshop

Japanese carpentry is a craft of remarkable elegance and accuracy, celebrated for its enduring methods and respect for natural materials. At its core, this trade embodies a philosophy of harmony—between artisan, tools, and the wood itself—rooted in a commitment to craftsmanship, an appreciation for simplicity, and a deep respect for the character of each piece of wood. This tradition is best known for its intricate joinery, where pieces of wood fit together seamlessly without the need for nails, screws, or adhesives. Each joint reflects the skill and dedication of the craftsperson, enabling the creation of structures and objects that are both functional and have the potential to become works of art.

This 10-day workshop invites participants to delve into the fundamentals of Japanese carpentry, guided by Wataru Kumano, an accomplished designer whose work is deeply rooted in wood and its creative potential. While not a traditional carpenter, Wataru offers a designer’s perspective on this craft, combining an appreciation for traditional methods with a contemporary approach to woodworking.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to traditional techniques, including the cutting and assembly of joints that define the trade. Participants will learn to use hand tools to create mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, and other joinery, practicing the patience and care that these methods demand. As they progress, they will have the opportunity to apply these techniques to the design and creation of individual objects.

The exercise culminates in a collaborative group project: an installation that will unite the skills of all participants, serving as a celebration of the learning and shared effort developed throughout the workshop.

This workshop is open to all, though it is particularly well-suited for those with some prior experience using hand tools and a strong interest in woodworking. During the ten days, participants will engage with the principles and techniques of Japanese carpentry, gaining a deeper understanding of its methods, philosophy, and the thoughtful balance between form and function that makes this craft so distinctive.
