SUMMER EXHIBITION

THE COLOURS OF ARCHITECTURE

DOMAINE DE BOISBUCHET

This exhibition explores the use of color in architecture from the caves of Lascaux to contemporary urban graffiti.

The world is full of colour and each colour has its own character. For that matter, what role does a grey of concrete play, when we are building our own world?

Colours have always been of great importance for architecture. Especially in times of upheaval with changing concepts and tastes it becomes apparent that we perceive them as signals, charged with emotion and individuality. That is why the identity of our architecture inevitably shows in its colours, and be it those of the soils and stones used for construction.

The Domaine de Boisbuchet is a laboratory of design, located on the border of two geological formations with different minerals. And looking at Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the colours of the earth are even more varied. The region bears prominent witness to the whole range of historical layers on which we have created our living environment – from the Lascaux Cave to the comics on the facades of Angoulême.

In 2024, France celebrates the ‘birth’ of Impressionism 150 years ago – an artistic style that expresses the French way of living like no other: light, refined and yet linked to the terroir. But first and foremost, the Impressionists opened our eyes to nature and to seeing itself, showing that we have to put aside our grey-tinted glasses in order to see how colourful the world is.
