This workshop offers an immersive exploration of the entire ceramic process, from extracting raw clay directly from the land to shaping and firing the final pieces. Over the course of ten days, participants will engage in a complete cycle of experimentation, discovering how clay is processed, formed, glazed, and transformed through firing.

Participants will explore a wide range of ceramic techniques, including extrusion, slab rolling, carving, hand-building, and pottery wheel work, experimenting with both form and structure. To complete the process, we will also work with glazes, examining how different surface treatments enhance texture, color, and material expression. The objects created will be in close dialogue with Boisbuchet, drawing inspiration from its landscape and materials. From pottery and tiles to vases, jugs, bricks, plates, bowls, planters, and candle holders, each piece will serve to explore the relationship between artisanal craftsmanship and industrial techniques, highlighting how traditional skills can inform contemporary production methods.

A key element of this workshop is the wood-fired kiln, designed at Boisbuchet by Corning following Korean-Japanese traditions. Unlike gas or electric kilns, where temperature and atmosphere are carefully regulated, wood firing requires some experience but always introduces elements of uncertainty. Variations in wood type, feeding rhythms, and airflow fluctuations create a firing process where no two pieces are ever the same. Participants will also engage in the full cycle of this technique, from preparing and stacking the kiln to maintaining the fire through night shifts, experiencing firsthand how heat, flame, and ash interact with the clay.
