SUMMER EXHIBITION 2015
À TABLE
JUNE 26TH – SEPTEMBER 20TH
À table ! An everyday object captures our attention. In 2015, Domaine de Boisbuchet’s cultural activities are all about the idea of the community. This is also the starting point for a new exhibition, which Boisbuchet invites you to discover: À Table!
À Table! presents an extraordinary selection of more than 30 fine examples of tables from the private design collection of Alexander von Vegesack, founding director of the renowned Vitra Design Museum. In order to reflect the different functions and meanings of this everyday object, they are arranged in nine different scenographies – veritable tableaux that reflect the history of table design.
Tables usually stand in the centers of our domestic environments where they provide places to concentrate on our more or less ritualised activities – gathering places or spaces devoted to dining, play or work. But whereas design history has paid lots of attention to chairs and other objects closely related to our bodies, tables have mostly been taken for granted; after all it is their purpose to provide a backdrop for everything that takes place on and around them.
This exhibition however, demonstrates the manifold cultural meanings of these dining tables, coffee tables, office and school desks, tea trolleys or garden tables. Realised by some of the most distinguished designers of the 20th century such as the Thonet brothers, Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé, Charles Eames or Ron Arad they represent, at the same time, a constant innovation of attitudes and styles throughout the history of modern furniture design.
