Ceramic is one of the oldest materials used and made by humanity, yet exploring its potential is an ongoing challenge. Floris Wubben has spent over 15 years investigating alternative ways of working with clay, approaching it not as a traditional ceramicist, but as a designer and maker who embraces experimentation. His work is driven by the constant search for new possibilities within the material, allowing the making process to take unexpected directions. This open-ended approach encourages participants to embrace unpredictability and uncover new possibilities through direct interaction with clay.

In this workshop, we will explore alternative ways of working with ceramics, using unconventional tools and processes that introduce an element of unpredictability between the maker and the final outcome. Participants will be encouraged to experiment freely, embracing accidents and surprises as part of the creative journey. Even the firing process itself will be experimental, exploring alternative techniques beyond conventional kilns. Depending on the nature of the pieces, we might fire them in an open pit dug into the ground, use a smaller gas kiln, or experiment with other low-tech firing methods. This approach will reinforce the idea that every step of the process—shaping, drying, and firing—is an opportunity for exploration and discovery.

Under the guidance of Floris Wubben, participants will be encouraged to step beyond traditional methods and embrace a more instinctive, process-led approach to ceramics. Whether experienced in ceramics or completely new to the medium, participants will walk away with newfound confidence in embracing unpredictability, an expanded toolkit of techniques, and a deeper appreciation for the creative potential of working with clay.
