Man Made – Machine Made

Jonas Lutz Finland
Finnish-born designer Jonas Lutz creates objects of bold simplicity and elegant solutions, often with a tacit playfulness. His work instantly reveals a continuous search for the novel and undiscovered. Simplicity of form is well balanced with a gentleness that invites the touch and a modesty which speaks of a deep comprehension of materials and a desire to elevate their qualities.
Jonas finds inspiration in Nordic furniture traditions as well as in the lively design culture of his adopted country of the Netherlands. Fueled by an upbringing in a creative milieu his instinct and sensibility in the work with materials intimates that of a sculptor’s act. This act is much replicated in the way he gives himself design briefs triggering investigations of materials and concepts, often inspired by objects of use in his home.
Jonas studied at the Carl Malmsten furniture school in Stockholm, Sweden, and has a bachelor in design from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His studio is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Satoshi Yoshida Japan
Satoshi Yoshida is the senior designer of Finnish furniture company Artek.
As in-house designer, he is in charge of a wide range of R&D projects, including the re-launch of Alvar Aalto classics, developing new products with leading international designers and brand collaborations. A recent key project at Artek was the 90th anniversary of Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60 in 2023. Satoshi developed a series of concepts to honour the legacy of Stool 60, highlighting its constructive principles and the natural beauty of wood, giving it a vibrant and distinctive impression.
Satoshi is a Japanese-born designer. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design in his home town Osaka. His passion for furniture design led him to pursue a Master of Arts in Furniture Design at Aalto University in Finland. After completing his MA degree in 2010, Satoshi began his professional career at Artek. Since 2015, Satoshi has lived and worked in Basel, Switzerland, where the Artek product development team is located within the headquarters of its parent company, Vitra

The Workshop
About a hundred years ago, Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto embarked on a series of experimental studies to develop specialized techniques for bending solid and laminated wood. His goal was to enhance both it’s versatility and its application, and it was achieved in particular with Artek, the company he and his wife Aino founded. Artek revolutionized the design and manufacture of furniture by merging industrial precision with the spirit of craftsmanship.
While the company celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, our workshop invites participants to explore the enduring possibilities of wood, from artisanal sculpting to machine-made industrial products. Under the guidance of two experts, Rotterdam-based Finnish designer Jonas Lutz, who is known for his always innovative way of working with wood, and Satoshi Yoshida, who is a key member of Artek’s team, participants experiment with various techniques to shape, bend, and join wood.
Some of the week’s progress might quite naturally evolve into furniture elements. However, the emphasis of our workshop remains on hands-on experimentation and iterative making rather than predefined results. It provides a unique mix of know-how transfer, exploring and rethinking the potential of wood, and examining how conventional uses can be reimagined and expanded for contemporary practice.
