Customud “custom made mud”
Is a collaboration between three Palestinian architects, Shiraz Khattab, Sireen Alawi and Mona Haj Yahya.
The platform aims for researching and experimenting fully handmade ceramic techniques as a reviving practice of the traditional Palestinian craft.
The process they went through, during the one week residency in the Domaine consists of three main stages. Mapping, testing & experimenting and finally reflecting the outcome on the final piece.
The three started by testing the strength of natural mud which we collected from the Domaine’s lake, as we mixed it with different natural materials from the surroundings, such as stone, leafs, shells and etc.
They shaped and tested the strength and the facilities of each mixture, as well as the mud’s capability to attach to other materials such as wood.
The foreign materials that we tried to connect to the natural clay collected from the lake of the domaine represented us as three foreigners trying to connect and adapt to the the domaine.
The final piece summarises the outcome challenge of those tests, our aim was to successfully connect the clay to the wood knowing by fact that clay and wood doesn’t naturally connect.
