Designing with the Sun
July 9th – July 15th 2023
Marjan van Aubel Netherlands
Marjan van Aubel Studio is an award-winning innovative solar design practice that brings solar energy into daily life. Designing for a positive future through combining the fields of sustainability, design and technology.
The studio is creating lasting change through solar design, integrating solar power seamlessly into our environments such as in buildings and objects. With the goal to make solar power more accessible for everyone. Most notable works are Sunne, Current Table, Power Plant and the roof of the Netherlands Pavilion at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai.
Marjan has collaborated with global brands such as Cos, Timberland, Swarovski with the aim of accelerating the global energy transition to solar. Graduating from the Royal College of Art (Design Products MA) in 2012 and the Rietveld Academy DesignLAB (BA) in 2009.

The Workshop
This workshop is about how we can design with sunlight.
Sunlight is a source of energy that we receive in abundance, every day again. We will take a closer look at the photovoltaic effect to find out how we can integrate it and the cyclically changing light conditions of day and year into our creative work. To move away from the technocratic perspective on solar energy and to make it more personal. How about we start looking at solar energy as a material, as something we can work and play with? Can we see objects or buildings as broken if they don’t generate their own energy?
In the course of this week, we will look far beyond the blue and black panels on the roofs and look at a more self-evident integration of solar energy: into objects, architecture or other localities and into innovative, "active" materials.
Energy generation should become an integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Imagine what objects or buildings could do if they functioned autonomously and generated their own energy!
