Felt Playground
August 25th – August 31st 2024
Audrey Bigouin France
Audrey Bigouin is a french designer with an obsession for soft materials.
Graduated from ESAD de Reims in 2016 and after pursuing a career in luxury leather goods, she founded Audrey B. Studio, her own design studio dedicated to soft materials. By taking an innovative approach to raw materials and know-how, she creates soft surfaces and 3D structures for the luxury sector. The designer creates tailor-made materials for fashion, product and interior design. Through the combination of design and craftsmanship, she plays and pushes the limits of various techniques such as braiding, pleating, leathercraft and embroidery.
Her studio is currently based in Paris at Les Ateliers de Paris where she develops her researches and experimental work as well as commissioned projects for luxury brands.
The Workshop
Initiated by the Villa Châteaufavier, a creative venue managed by the Lainamac trade association, and the Cité internationale de la tapisserie, this workshop is an opportunity to experiment and create with a precious material: the wool of French sheep from our local environment.
Your aesthetic and functional explorations, focussing on felted wool, will open up a material that embodies a deep connection between man, animal and nature, whose qualities offer an infinite wealth of sensations and which has enriched the history of art for thousands of years.
The aim of this week is to develop flexible structures through cutting, braiding, folding, knotting and several other techniques. The wool will become our playground, where we will invent patterns, flat structures such as reliefs, carpets or tapestries, or three-dimensional structures such as clothing.
Featured Partners
The Cité internationale de la tapisserie is a public institution founded in 2010 in response to the UNESCO listing of Aubusson tapestry as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Located in Aubusson, it is run by a Joint Syndicate bringing together the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Creuse Department and the Creuse Grand Sud municipalities, with a significant level of support from the French government.
The Cité is a unique establishment with a wide range of functions dedicated to promoting Aubusson tapestry. With its museum and reference collection, its training centre providing a two-year diploma in tapestry weaving (Brevet des Métiers d’Art “Arts de la lisse”) and its European-level resource centre, the Cité is buzzing with activity. Committed to a proactive policy of contemporary creation, the Cité has been building up a high-quality contemporary Fund since 2010 through calls for projects and partnerships with art galleries. Since 2017, it has also launched the major woven adventures “Aubusson weaves Tolkien”, “The imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson tapestry” and “Homage to George Sand”, which are renewing the way we approach the tapestry medium.
The Cité is also involved in the development of a tapestry – woven art – textile design and materials ecosystem, promoting and supporting the arrival in Creuse of designers and project developers in the field of textile. In this respect, the Cité is the first “Musée de France” institution to be awarded the “Manufacture de proximité” economic label (productive third place).
