Bart Hess (NL)
Protect Yourself
July 25th – July 31st 2021
Bart Hess Netherlands
The work of Bart Hess is of the most tactile and intuitive nature. He first delved into instinctive textiles when studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he created A Hunt for High Tech, a collection of materials that mimicked the bestial outer layers of unfamiliar hybrid species, accompanied by an evocative film that brilliantly brought his concepts to life.
Bart Hess explores several fields combining material studies, animation and photography in a surrealist manner.
With his fascination for the human body and the manipulation of it, Hess pushes the boundaries of the textile design profession: his designs transcend the craft, as Hess chooses to extend them via other media, such as film, photography and animation.
His futuristic fabrics and textures blur the boundary between textile and skin, human and new species.

The Workshop
Our world no longer is as open as it used to be - or as one thought it was not long ago. We increasingly feel the vulnerability of our well-being, our belongings, ourselves, and our integrity, and the call for security is getting louder. Yet protection has always been a useful strategy and an important demand in many designs. So let’s face today’s world and start with ourselves, our body:
Exposed to nature, to all these strangers around us, to the obvious and the invisible threats of Boisbuchet's natural and social environment, this workshop invites you to design and make protection for your head, feet, or skin, for parts or for the whole of our bodies. We are going to use textiles, sheets and membranes, armour, rubber, silicone, paint, or creme to protect us against diseases or other enemies, impermissible sightings, physical injury, or a broken heart. Let’s get in touch!
