Nathanaël Abeille France
Nathanaël Abeille was born in 1986 in the Ardèche region of France. In 2011, he graduated as a designer from L’ENSAD Paris, and in 2014 from ENSADLab Paris. He was awarded the Bourse Agora prize in 2015, presented by the French Minister of Culture, for his innovative design research. After two years at Ateliers Jean Nouvel, he finally set up his own firm.
He belongs to that generation of designers who are convinced that a thorough application of materials and manufacturing processes contributes to solving practical, concrete problems and thus transforming everyday life in a rational, holistic way. In fact, he is currently working as a designer-researcher in the field of climate change. In this context, he places particular emphasis on the socially sustainable use of natural light.
Nathanaël Abeille lives in Frioul and works in Marseille. His creations are often found in public spaces, notably in Marseille, Haute-Savoie, Buenos Aires and Paris.
The Workshop
Natural light is a constant of life - and we can hack it: by letting the sun shine in from the north during midday, from the west in the morning and from the east in the evening while the moon serves at night. To do so, it just takes a bathroom mirror, a pot filled with water or the part of a car body.
Depending on location and intention, we'll decide how to direct these reflectors towards Boisbuchet's buildings, the stars of our production: We'll illuminate their shady interiors with astral light only, without electricity. And to celebrate the result of our efforts, we'll finally photograph each situation in order to publish a catalogue of illuminated architecture.
The Greeks once burnt the sails of attacking ships, as simply as effectively, by reflecting the sunlight, and Egyptians reflected that same light to illuminate the centre of massive pyramids, just as ingenious. However, in today's everyday living spaces natural light has almost degenerated into recreational fun.
Our architecture has.been criticised time and again for not being properly orientated. In fact, we are constantly switching on artificial lighting, mostly without giving attention. This week, however, we'll put thought and effort into creating sensitive alternatives that shall give Boisbuchet its ancestral and due glamour.
