Wataru Kumano (JP)
Wood Inside and Outside
July 23rd – July 29th 2023
Wataru Kumano Japan
Wataru Kumano studied in Finland from 2001 to 2008 and worked as an assistant designer at Jasper Morrison Tokyo studio after returning to Japan. He established the design office “kumano” in 2011, and works on projects with domestic and international furniture makers such as Karimoku, Tendo Mokko, and Nikari, based on the theme of design with a background such as environment, functionality, and regional characteristics. In 2021, he did a semester workshop at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in Switzerland, and in the same year he became an associate professor at Musashino Art University in Japan.

The Workshop
The unity of meaning, being and doing is an ideal deeply rooted in Japanese culture. In this workshop we attempt a better understanding of working with wood: its properties, a better use of appropriate materials and tools, and the exploration of new ways to articulate the incomparable features of wood.
At the same time, we will ask ourselves a question not easy to answer: to what extent will our designs actually be meaningful? In order to find out whether our work fits the environment in which it shall be used, we will get to know that environment and the things that have been created in that place, its culture and climate.
Consciously considering these circumstances is always an integral part of my design process: What is a design that is friendly to its users, its makers, its places and its material? In Boisbuchet and in the encounter with universal wood, anyone living in the present can have the honour of discovering something entirely new.
